Skiing Fun in the Heart of Europe

Slovakia has about 100 mountains over 2,000 meters (6,561 ft) to offer. Two thirds of the country are situated in the Carpathian Mountains. They start in the western sector of Slovakia near the capital Bratislava and spread out over the entire northern part. The highest summit of the Carpathian Mountains is on Slovakian ground, called Gerlachovský štít („Gerlach Peak“) with a height of 2,655 meters (8,710 ft). Winter sport enthusiasts are greeted with 36 skiing regions with a combined 360 piste kilometers (224 mi).

In almost every region of the country you will find great ski resorts. In the Tatra Mountains skiing is especially famous because there were already many skiing competitions in the beginning of the 20th century. Here you will find the largest ski resort of the country called Jasná. The descends run down all around the 2.023 meter (6,637 ft) high mountain Chopok. Freestyle skiers and snowboarders can be the first to ski or snowboard in five deep powder snow zones at Jasná. Other popular skiing regions would be Štrbské Pleso, Vrátna, Donovaly and Kubínska Hoľa.

For refreshment and food the mountain lodges mostly offer traditional foods with cheese and milk products. The Slovakian national dish is “Spätzle”, a soft egg noodle with Bacon and “Brimsen”, a salty goat cheese.
